There are a number of reasons why gums start to recede but most are avoidable if proper care is taken of the teeth and gums. Brushing and flossing regularly are essential. This basic hygiene must be combined with regular checkups at the dentist in order to avoid gum recession. Also, take these factors into consideration: - Aggressive brushing can cause gums to recede - Smoking and tobacco products also irritates gum tissue - Teeth grinding (bruxism) exerts pressure on the teeth and can affect the gums Gum disease is the biggest cause of gum recession and can “cause an infection, loose teeth and even tooth loss” if left untreated.
